Are Fruit Flies Taking Over Your Drains?

Fruit flies are those pesky little gnats. Fruit flies can be annoying when flying near your face.   They are tiny, tan and have red eyes. Their small size makes them hard to knock out of the air.

If you notice these little nuances flying around your head while brushing your teeth, putting makeup on, or washing your face, then call Master Plumbing. While fruit flies aren’t as big as house flies and don’t bite like horse files, they are a big nuisance and quickly breed. Sinks can be a prime breeding ground for fruit flies. It is best to eliminate them  as quickly as possible.

When are Fruit Flies Active?

According to Entomology at University of Kentucky, fruit flies can be a problem year round, but are especially common during late summer/fall because they are attracted to ripened or fermenting fruits and vegetables.

Why Are Fruit Flies In My Bathroom?

Fruit flies are attracted to sources of food in your bathroom. The trash can be a prime location to feed. Any food in your trash is an excellent meal by fruit fly standards. Additionally any food debris in your drains can invite the fruit flies into the drains of  your shower and sink.

You can get rid of fruit flies using the following methods.

Make your bathroom less inviting to fruit flies

Fruit flies like moist environments. The bathroom has plenty of moisture. Get rid of wet objects in your bathroom to get rid of fruit flies. Make sure there are no wet towels or clothes left on the bathroom floor. Use a fan when taking a shower. Make sure plumbing leaks are fixed.

Clean your drains

Clean your drains to kill fruit fly larva. You can boil water in drain pipes to sterilize the fruit flies environment. However, this might be a temporary fix if nutrients are still present in the drain.  Fruit flies can simply re infest the drain. A more permanent fix is to snake your bathroom drains.

Call a professional

If you don’t have the time or don’t want to clean your drains, you can call a professional to have your drains inspected and have the fruit flies eradicated. In addition to solving your problem our professional can check your plumbing for leaks.
